This historical drama is set in post-Civil War England and depicts the life of General Thomas Fairfax (Dougray Scott) and his dear friend Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth). When King Charles I, (Rupert Everett), is taken prisoner, the friendship between the two men begins to disintegrate because of their vastly differing opinions on what should be done. Fairfax takes pity on the King and believes they should be merciful, whereas Cromwell frowns upon leniency. The dilemma continues when the Speaker of the House, Denzil Holles, rallies a troupe of conspirators to mediate an illegal deal with the King in exchange for his freedom. When their plot is discovered, the King is put on trial and subsequently executed, which puts Cromwell in charge. The drama concludes with a reunion between Fairfax and Cromwell, one of whom is on their deathbed (I won't ruin the surprise for those of you who weren't History majors).
