The Spiderwick Chronicles

PG 2008 | 96 mins | Family
Nick Nolte is an ogre. And Seth Rogen is a hobgoblin. That's not defamation of character, it's a cast list for 2008's fantasy feature that's chock full of fairies, sylphs, swordfights, and kids from across the pond using pretty darn convincing American accents. Based on the best-selling children's books, Spiderwick is The Neverending Story of the digital age, making the most of CGI and all it has to offer. But some things you can't fake with special effects - Freddie Highmore takes on the dual role of twin brothers Simon and Jared, and while the computers put him in two places at once, it's his unabashed acting skills that have you believing he's two different boys. Oh, and Martin Short is a brownie.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Most 13-year-old girls today dream about the Jonas Brothers, but at thirteen the author of The Spiderwick Chronicles was dreaming about strange creatures and writing her "field guide."
  2. The Spiderwick Chronicles' filmmakers originally wanted twins for the roles of Jared and Simon but settled on Freddie Highmore for both parts. I hope he got paid double.
  3. The Spiderwick Chronicles had the most doubling shots than any other movie in history. Maybe it would have been cheaper to hire twins.
  4. To lose his British accent, actor Freddie Highmore would only speak with an American accent during the entire filming of The Spiderwick Chronicles. It probably drove his mother crazy.
  5. The Spiderwick "Chronic-les" Mary-Louise Parker is far from (Helen) Grace, playing marijuana dealer Nancy Botwin on the show Weeds.
  6. No creatures were harmed during the filming of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Nine-inch mannequins were used in their place, since Nine Inch Nails were busy on tour.
  7. An entire house exterior was constructed for the filming of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Apparently destroying protected historical homes is frowned upon.
  8. The creatures in The Spiderwick Chronicles were all based on actual Irish-Celtic folklore. I guess that's why the Lucky Charms leprechaun did not make the cut.
  9. Film prints of The Spiderwick Chronicles were labeled with the title "Widow" when they were sent to theaters. Given the name of the film, I'm guessing this was in reference to Black Widow type of spider, but who really knows.
  10. Actress Sarah Bolger (Mallory Grace) spent five weeks in fencing bootcamp to prepare for her role in The Spiderwick Chronicles. She continued her reign of terror as (Bloody) Mary Tudor in television miniseries, "The Tudors." Not that I'm a celery stalker or anything.
