Set in late 1950's Ireland, this film tells the story of Tara Maguire (Robin Wright), a young woman who announces her pregnancy to the conservative town she calls home but refuses to identify the baby's father. Her priest, fearful that she will bring bad luck upon the parish, insists that she marry the town constable (Albert Finney). Needless to say, Tara isn't interested and drama ensues. As luck would have it, Tara does find love, but it is with a member of a traveling group of actors, The Playboys, who she only meets when they try to steal one of her chickens. As my mom always said, "it is all fun and games until somebody gets hurt" - and that certainly is the case here. The disgruntled and rejected constable comes back into the picture at the worst time. He throws Tom, (Aidan Quinn) one of the Playboys, in jail and eventually erupts in jealousy, violence and hate.
