The Expendables

R 2010 | 103 mins | Action Adventure
Clear

What happens when every Hollywood tough guy you can think of joins forces for an action blockbuster? Wicked explosions, ferocious hand-to-hand combat and plenty of other serious badassery. Sylvester Stallone leads his lethal team of mercenaries (Jet Li, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture) into a tiny South American country where their mission is seemingly simple: overthrow the murderous dictator and make a boatload of cash. But when the operation goes south, these modern-day warriors will be lucky to get out alive.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Sly branches out: The Expendables is Sylvester Stallone's first directorial effort since 1983's Staying Alive that doesn't feature a guy named Rambo or Rocky.
  2. Don't you order your trucks in threes? A trio of custom 1955 Ford F100s were built for the movie by West Coast Customs - one for green screen shots, one to crash, and one for Stallone to take home as a souvenir.
  3. The long road to Hale Caesar: before Terry Crews landed the role, Wesley Snipes, Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent all had dibs on the part.
  4. It helps to have an in with the director... Stallone's co-star from The Specialist, Eric Roberts, nabbed the part of James Munroe, even though heavy hitters such as Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Ray Liotta were also considered for the role.
  5. Jean-Claude Van Damme reportedly turned down a part in the movie because he felt his character wasn't developed enough. Can somebody explain "stuff blows up" to this guy?
  6. Rumors swirled that Sandra Bullock might rejoin her Demolition Man co-star Sylvester Stallone for The Expendables - but when asked about it, Bullock hadn't actually heard of the project. Pesky facts, always ruining good gossip.
  7. A football player is just a mercenary who likes Gatorade... Steve Austin and Terry Crews appeared together in the 2005 jailhouse gridiron comedy The Longest Yard.
  8. Jason Statham and Jet Li also re-teamed for this one; they'd appeared together previously in The One and War. England and China, represent!
  9. That's one committed actor/writer/director: during his fight scene with Steve Austin, Sylvester Stallone broke his neck.
  10. Broken neck or no, Stallone will be back with The Expendables 2 in August of 2012. Start stocking up on testosterone now!
