The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

PG-13 2008 | 166 mins | Drama Romance
Here's the hook: a man is born elderly and ages backwards. Curious? Keep reading. Directed by the Oscar-nominated David Fincher, this Oscar-nominated drama stars an Oscar-nominated Brad Pitt as the titular orphan plagued with a bizarre disease that causes him to get younger as the years pass. The touching tale unfolds as Ben navigates the trials and tribulations of growing older/younger – exploring life, loss, and mortality a la Forrest Gump (minus the chocolates and buzz cut). Of course, the biggest problem of all is falling for a beautiful woman (Cate Blanchett) who's passing her peak just as he's reaching his. Oscar-nominated cinematography, costumes and supporting performances add to the masterfully-crafted spectacle as well as the film's 13 total nods – though it took home only three. Now that is curious.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. To make sure they got the clothing right for all the different time periods, the costume designers consulted with Levi's and used their Vintage Clothing line. Nothing could get between the filmmakers and their Levi's.
  2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is inspired by a quote by Mark Twain, "The best part of life was from the beginning and the worst part was the end." How many disgruntled film goers have also uttered this phrase?
  3. Spike Jonze was once in talks to direct The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It certainly would have been a very different film if the "Jackass" co-creator had taken the helm of the period piece.
  4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button tells the tail of an individual who appears younger and younger as he gets older and older. No, it is not Dick Clark's biography.
  5. Brad Pitt had to sit in the make-up chair for about 5 hours everyday just to prepare for his role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This is about the same time that most Hollywood actresses spend getting ready for The Academy Awards...or to go to their local Starbucks.
  6. Three actresses jumped at the opportunity to work with Brad Pitt for a second time in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cate Blanchett, Julia Ormond, and Tilda Swinton all worked with Pitt before and discovered that working with him is anything but the pits.
  7. Danny Boyle was previously working on the project Solomon Grundy but pushed it back because he thought the film's storylines were too similar. Boyle certainly wasn't slumming when his film Slumdog Millionaire beat out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for the Oscar.
  8. Actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta were both slated at different times to play the lead in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Non-scientologist Brad Pitt finally landed the role.
  9. The pygmy man kept in a monkey house seen in the film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was based on reality. In 1916, Ota Benga's captors realized their treatment of him was inhumane and released him. Too little, too late. Having no ability to cope in the real world, the tiny man shot himself shortly after his release.
  10. Daisy uses the word Kismet, eluding to predestined fate, when she meets Benjamin for the second time as a grown up. It is also a world used frequently as part of pickup lines in bars across the English-speaking world.
