The Conversation

PG 1974 | 114 mins | Thriller
Big Brother may be watching you, but it's Gene Hackman who's listening. Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 suspense-a-thon tackled the issues of privacy and responsibility long before our cell phone signals were broadcasting everybody's beeswax to the world. And while the technology may seem outdated (what's a pay phone?), the notion that words are only as important as their context has never felt timelier.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. "The Conversation" is actor Gene Hackman's favorite film that he has appeared in. That is high praise from an actor who has appeared in such notable films as "Superman," "Mississippi Burning," and "Unforgiven."
  2. You say Call, I say Caul. Gene Hackman's character ended up the last name of Caul after a simple typing error. I guess they didn't have spell check then.
  3. If you are in San Francisco for the night you won't be able to book a room at the Jack Tarr Hotel. Instead call the Cathedral Hill Hotel. Ask for room 773 if you want to sleep in the murder victim's room.
  4. You won't hear the Mime complaining about his role although he might have mimed about it during his day job as a mime in San Fran's Union Square.
  5. As a thank you for the high grossing box office The Godfather achieved, Paramount gave Francis Ford Coppola a Mercedes. In a nod to them he gave the car a cameo at the end of the film.
  6. It started out as a cameo role but Francis Ford Coppola liked Harrison Ford so much (is anyone surprised here?) he developed Martin Stett into a much more substantial character.
  7. The success of The Godfather not only gave Francis Ford Coppola the gift of a blue Mercedes but the gift of The Conversation. He was able to get financing for The Conversation because of it.
  8. "The Conversation" was not the last movie where Gene Hackman would play a surveillance expert. In 1998's "Enemy of the State," he would also play an expert in the art of surveillance.
  9. "The Godfather" and "The Godfather II" may top many people's favorite movies of all time but "The Conversation" tops Francis Ford Coppola's list. It's his favorite film he's ever directed.
  10. Gene Hackman's character is seen listening at the door of an apartment. When he finally enters the female character's apartment, she tells him she feels like he's somehow listening to her. Ironically, the film's boom mic can be seen in several shots during the scene.
