The Blue Lamp is the story of the ordinary 'copper' on the beat - in particular the story of PC George Dixon, an old-timer, and his new recruit and protégé, Andy Mitchell. When Dixon is shot trying to arrest a couple of crooks, and later dies from his wounds, Mitchell takes up the case with a vengeance.
