Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Filmmakers got inspiration for the name "Shaka-Ri" from the actor they had originally asked to play Sybok: Sean Connery.
  2. Shatner spawn alert! Melanie Shatner, William's daughter, appears as the yeoman holding Kirk's malfunctioning log (that's not dirty, we swear).
  3. Who you gonna call? Industrial Light & Magic was unable to return for this film because they had a full slate - they were already working on Ghostbusters II.
  4. No more hand-me-downs! After years of reusing parts from previous movies, the Enterprise bridge was built almost entirely from scratch for The Final Frontier.
  5. This marks the final film voyage of the original Enterprise crew (Sulu appears in Star Trek VI, but he's no longer a crew member. Uhhh, spoiler alert?).
  6. Speaking of Sulu, George Takei almost didn't return for this film - reportedly because he wasn't eager to be directed by William Shatner. Fortunately, the two actors buried the hatchet at least long enough to get the next two movies made.
  7. Déjà vu: Early in the film, McCoy says the line "If I'm not careful I'll end up talking to myself." He delivers the same line in an original Star Trek episode, "The Corbamite Maneuver."
  8. The mountain that Kirk climbs at the beginning of the film? It's named El Capitan.
  9. A sign of things to come: the film featured a tie-in video game... in MS-DOS format (look it up, kids).
  10. The Final Frontier scored the highest opening weekend of the Star Trek series to date - narrowly knocking Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade from the top spot.
