Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. There are no small Vulcans, only small(er) parts: actor David Gautreaux was cast as the Enterprise's new science officer, until Leonard Nimoy agreed to return as Spock. Gautreaux had to settle for the less substantial role of Commander Branch.
  2. The "space walk" sequence originally included both Kirk and Spock, instead of Spock solo. Because the final frontier is a lot less lonely with two.
  3. Freeze frame: super slo-mo your way through Spock's mind meld with V'Ger and you'll see Klingons, Epsilon IX and the Voyager VI space probe.
  4. Extra special extras: Bjo Trimble, who co-organized the "save Star Trek" letter-writing campaign responsible for keeping the show alive another year, appears as a member of the crew.
  5. So far, Star Trek: The Motion Picture holds the record for longest running time of any of the Star Trek films (including J. J. Abrams' 2009 reboot).
  6. Burning the candle at both ends: the V'Ger prop took so much time to build that one end was used for scenes while the other end was still under construction.
  7. Mrs. Shatner alert! The actress who plays DiFalco, Marcy Lafferty, also happened to be William Shatner's wife.
  8. The Klingon dialogue delivered by the Klingon ship's captain came from the mind of none other than Commander Scott himself, James Doohan. Does that mean Klingon has an inherently Scottish accent?
  9. Wrap your head around this one: this once held the record for most expensive movie ever made... with a budget of $46 million.
  10. Talk about gravitas! The original trailers for Star Trek: The Motion Picture were narrated by Orson Welles (maybe they should have called the movie Citizen Kirk).
