Son of Rambow

PG-13 2007 | 96 mins | Comedy
Nothing says "Rambo" like a pair of British schoolboys. In the early '80s, two lads form an unlikely friendship with the help of a video camera and a bootleg copy of Rambo: First Blood... yeah the one starring Sylvester Stallone. They set out to recreate the movie for a kids' film contest, complete with wildly inventive stunts and a growing cast of schoolmates. The sweet coming-of-age story is peppered with fanciful animation sequences from writer/director Garth Jennings, who also helmed 2005's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Insurance deductibles aside, it's the kind of film that will make you want to hand your kids a camcorder and let their imaginations steal the show.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The "w" in the title for Son of Rambow was not a typo, it was added for legal reasons. "Whatever!"
  2. Of course it was supposed to be spelled R-A-M-B-0. Silly lawyers. In the end the film makers get the last laugh as you can hear in the credits when Carter tells Will he misspelled it. Listen here.
  3. I'm not one to gossip but...Son of Rambow features Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick as the bully older brother. XOXO.
  4. Son of Rambow's writer-director Garth Jennings hired his wife to play a nurse in the film. Despite that sweet gesture, Garth still has to take out the garbage at home.
  5. You light up my life...for a price. Filmmakers on "Son of Rambow" learned an expensive lesson. If you sign legal agreements with people who do not own the property you're using, you will get lights held for ransom by the people who do.
  6. It was not much of a stretch for French child actor Jules Sitruk to play a French exchange student in Son of Rambow.
  7. Garth Jennings' experience directing musicians in rock videos prepared him for directing children in the feature film Son of Rambow. And speaking of music, children of the '80s will enjoy the soundtrack, which includes songs from Duran Duran, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure.
  8. When quizzed by Spike TV, Son of Rambow director Garth Jennings could not name Rambo's director. I guess even directors don't care about directors.
  9. Subtitles were used to translate "bonjour" in Son of Rambow after a "stupid man" at a screening said he couldn't understand any of the dialogue. Uh, hello?????
  10. Ramblown out of proportion! In the film, there's a reference to the long-held urban myth about the dangers of combining Coke and Pop Rocks. One of the most popular rumors centered around John Gilchrist, the boy who played Mikey in the famous 1970s Life cereal commercial. It was said he died when his stomach exploded from having consumed this combination. These rumors are 100% false.
