Some Like It Hot

TV-PG 1959 | 122 mins | Comedy
The American Film Institute named Some Like It Hot the greatest American comedy film of all time - and who are we to argue? Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon take drag to hilarious new heights as they don dresses and wigs to avoid a mob of blood-thirsty gangsters. It's probably tough to feel pretty when you're fighting a five o'clock shadow; just imagine doing it next to Marilyn Monroe, too.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Sometimes black and white is a practical choice, not an artistic one: filmmakers decided not to shoot the movie in color after discovering a green tint around the heavy drag make-up worn by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.
  2. Plenty of sunshine, wrong coast: the Hotel Del Coronado in California stood in for Florida during filming.
  3. The movie did not receive Production Code approval, and so it went without an MPAA logo in the credits and title sequence. But for those anxious to know a movie's rating, rest assured: the National Legion of Decency scored a "C" for "Condemned."
  4. If "Condemned" doesn't do it for you, how about a state-specific warning? Because of all that scandalous cross-dressing, the film was deemed "too disturbing for Kansans" and thus banned throughout the Sunflower State.
  5. What's in a name? Earlier titles for the film included Fanfares of Love and Not Tonight, Josephine.
  6. Speaking of what could have been... Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon filmed cameo appearances for a TV pilot based on the movie - but alas, it was never picked up for production.
  7. The powder room test: Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon tried out their female make-up and costumes by freshening up in women's restrooms on the Goldwyn Studios lot. Nobody screamed, so apparently they passed the test.
  8. Jack Lemmon reportedly sent yearly "thank you" chocolates to Jerry Lewis, who turned down the role of Jerry/Daphne because he didn't want to wear a dress. Lemmon would go on to earn an Oscar nomination (but hey, chocolate is good too).
  9. Other actors considered for the Jerry/Daphne role included Frank Sinatra and Anthony Perkins. No word on whether or not they got a piece of the Lemmon chocolate train.
  10. Believe it or not, Marilyn Monroe was not director Billy Wilder's first choice for the role of Sugar - he wanted South Pacific star Mitzi Gaynor.
