Some Kind of Wonderful

PG-13 1987 | 95 mins | Comedy
A redheaded teenager from the wrong side of the tracks pines for an affluent classmate, while the quirky best friend with the heart of gold looks helplessly on. Think of it as Pretty in Pink Redux, with the genders flipped (except James Spader, who is now Craig Sheffer). Written by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch, just like Pink, 1987's Some Kind of Wonderful never strays too far from the teen romance formula-but Eric Stoltz's soulful eyes, Lea Thompson's heavenly hairdo and Mary Stuart Masterson's brash vulnerability (not to mention her sweet ride!) turn this into something special. Bonus points for best "practice" kiss on top of an oil drum ever.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. John Hughes offered actress Molly Ringwald a starring role in his film Some Kind of Wonderful. She turned it down, thus ending a successful relationship with the powerful writer/producer and cooling what was a hot film career.
  2. Lea Thompson had actually originally rejected the role of Amanda Jones in Some Kind of Wonderful. However after Howard the Duck didn't do so well, she realized she probably shouldn't be turning down work and accepted the part.
  3. Lea Thompson owes actor Eric Stoltz a great debt. Not only did she get offered a starring role in director Howard Deutch's film Some Kind of Wonderful on Stoltz's recommendation, she and the director went on to have many successful projects together; including marriage and two children.
  4. Some Kind of Wonderful was the feature film debut of Kirk Cameron's kid sister Candace; otherwise know as D.J. Tanner on the TV sitcom "Full House."
  5. Thanks to movies like The Italian Job and an aggressive marketing campaign by the manufacturer, today Americans are very familiar with the Mini Cooper auto import. Original viewers of Some Kind of Wonderful were left baffled by the unfamiliar dilapidated version of the car driven in the movie.
  6. The film Some Kind of Wonderful closely mirrored writer John Hughes previous work, Pretty In Pink. Not happy being pressured into changing the first film's ending, he wrote its follow-up with the same plot but with the ending he wanted. Both films made him a lot of money.
  7. Writer/producer John Hughes may have left the directing of Some Kind of Wonderful to Howard Deutch, but it was under Hughes' direction that his "discoveries" actors Elias Koteas and Maddie Corman were cast in the film.
  8. When director Martha Coolidge dropped out of filming Some Kind of Wonderful, her replacement, Howard Deutch, dropped her chosen stars of Kim Delaney and Kyle MacLachlan.
  9. The only lead actor who was chosen in the original round of casting for Some Kind of Wonderful to appear in the film was Eric Stoltz. This was not surprising since his character was written especially for him.
  10. The three characters in Some Kind of Wonderful were Rolling Stones, so to speak. The drummer Watts and a character named Keith were named after Rolling Stones Charlie Watts and Keith Richards. Amanda Jones, one of the lead characters, is a Rolling Stones song.
