Shanghai Surprise

PG-13 1986 | 97 mins | Comedy Romance
Ahh, Madonna. She is the queen of reinvention, the mistress of complexities, so it seems perfectly logical that back in days when she slithered on a stage in a trashy wedding dress, she'd also choose to portray a wholesome Christian missionary on the run in Shanghai. Ok, maybe she didn't do it for the character study, but starring in the film did have one major perk: she got to work alongside her then-husband Sean Penn. The two spent most of their tumultuous 4-year marriage dodging paparazzi, and ironically they spend most of the film on the run as well, being pursued by various scoundrels and double-crossers. It's a must-see for any Madonna fan, and music lovers will appreciate the tunes performed by one of the film's executive producers - the late great George Harrison. Surprise, indeed!
