Rocky V

PG-13 1990 | 104 mins | Drama Action Sports Films

Despite his global fame and championship belts, years of intense beatings in the ring have left Rocky Balboa with potentially debilitating brain damage. To make matters worse, his fortune has been squandered by a shady financial advisor - sending Rocky, wife Adrian and son Robert back to their old Philly neighborhood, where they're forced to start all over again. Taking himself out of the ring, Rocky decides to train up-and-coming boxer Tommy "Machine" Gunn, a young talent whose loyalty is tested by an unscrupulous fight promoter.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Rocky V earned the first PG-13 of the Rocky franchise - the first four films were all rated PG.
  2. Say it ain't so: in Sylvester Stallone's original script, Rocky died at the end of the movie. Near the end of filming Sly finally thought better of it, realizing it would be like "killing off Superman."
  3. Art imitates life: Rocky's career trajectory follows Stallone's - in Rocky III and Rocky IV, the boxer was on top of the world, just like the actor who created him. When it came time to write the script for Rocky V, Stallone's own popularity had begun to wane, and so it went for his alter ego.
  4. The street kid Marie who appeared in the first Rocky shows up briefly during the street fight at the end of the movie - original actress Jodi Letizia shot a full scene, but it wound up on the cutting room floor.
  5. More echoes of the original: Tommy Gunn's first fight mimics the opening scene of Rocky, when Balboa takes on Spider Rico. The two scenes were even shot in the same hall.
  6. George Washington Duke was a thinly veiled caricature of boxing promoter Don King - only without the super fly haircut.
  7. UK boxer Frank "True Brit" Bruno was originally offered the role of Union Cane, before the part went to Michael "Mercury" Williams.
  8. Sweet swag! If you were lucky enough to attend the movie's premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, you might have scored a replica of the golden glove necklace featured in the film.
  9. Know your venue: when it came time to choreograph the street fight between Rocky and Tommy, Stallone turned not to a boxer, but to professional wrestler Terry Funk.
  10. Next time you're in Philadelphia, swing by legendary boxing venue The Blue Horizon - several of the movie's fight scenes were filmed there.
