Robocop

Synopsis

No movie title says it all like RoboCop. Set in the futuristic, crime-ridden city of Old Detroit, this sci-fi classic focuses on a brutally slain police officer (Peter Weller) who's given a second chance to get his law enforcement on after he's reconstructed into a half-man, half-machine super-human cyborg. Chock-full of unflinching violence, clever satire, and slick special effects, this is the flick that not only put controversial director Paul Verhoeven on the map, but even inspired its own '80s dance move. Take that, Terminator!

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The title character in "RoboCop" used an impressive looking computer to look up criminal records. Looks can be deceiving. In this case, the device was actually a Northern Telecom telephone switch.
  2. It was so hot inside the robot suit that Peter Weller almost became NoMoCop. Producers quickly installed an air conditioning system to keep him cool and stop him for losing close to 3lbs a day.
  3. If you want anyone to see your movie you can't have an "X" rating. RoboCop was a bit too gory for the MPAA so the director took out some of the more graphic scenes and was able to eek out an "R." But if you can't get enough blood and guts rent the DVD. It's all there.
  4. The producers wanted a slim RoboCop so Arnold Schwarzenegger who was briefly considered lost the part due to his massive size.
  5. The point-of-view shots in "RoboCop" included references to MS-DOS. The computer operating system is now virtually extinct in the current Windows-world. Microsoft left the system for dead when it stopped its development in 2000.
  6. Director, Paul Verhoeven must have thought he wasn't going to get recognized - hence the scene in the dance club with the man making the scene. Yep. It's Paul.
  7. Nancy Allen only got the part after Stephanie Zimablist sadly had to return to the set of Remington Steele. Well maybe not so sadly, after all Pierce Brosnan was waiting for her. Now that's certainly not sad.
  8. Was it a sponsorship? The police drove Ford Tauruses and the villians drove 6000 SUX. Could that be a Pontiac 6000. Clearly Ford got some preferential treatment.
  9. Orion Pictures recycled music from another cyborg film for the trailer of "RoboCop." The music came from the 1984 Orion release, "The Terminator."
  10. The character Robocop may have seemed tough but the suits used during shooting of "Robocop" were anything but. Seven suits had to be constructed to ensure that there would be an intact suit available right to the last day of shooting.
