Road House

R 1989 | 114 mins | Action Adventure
Tough but sensitive loner Dalton (Patrick Swayze) swaggers into town on a mission to clean up the Double Deuce bar. You'd think that means bouncing the riffraff and keeping the peace, but before it's all said and done he'll take on a local racketeer (Ben Gazzara), call on the help of his bouncer sensei (Sam Elliott) and earn the affections of a lady-type doctor (Kelly Lynch). With Swayze's spectacular mullet and fisticuffs aplenty, the wild west has nothing on Jasper, Missouri circa 1989.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The Man with No (First) Name: Patrick Swayze's character is referred to only as "Dalton" throughout the movie. If you've been losing sleep at night wondering what name his good mama gave him, check out the sequel and all will be revealed. (Be forewarned, though: Swayze does not appear in Road House 2.)
  2. If you need a stiff drink and a quick tune-up the next time you're in Jasper, Missouri, don't count on the Double Deuce or Red's Auto Parts - both buildings were mere facades built for the movie.
  3. Who says a bouncer can't be a bookworm, too? Dalton is seen reading Jim Harrison's Legends of the Fall in the film.
  4. Pop quiz, car nerds! What makes Dalton's 1965 Buick Riviera so special? That's the only year Buick used the "clamshell" headlight covers for that model. Your dad probably already knew that.
  5. East meets West: although he uses traditional boxing and mixed martial arts moves in the fight scenes, Dalton can also be seen practicing tai chi while training. Now if we could only find a restaurant that serves egg rolls with a Denver omelette.
  6. Patrick Swayze gets down with Kelly Lynch to the Otis Redding song "These Arms of Mine" - the same song he used to romance Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing. Add it to your iPod and see what kind of magic YOU can make.
  7. The man who composed the film's score, Michael Kamen, also scored the Lethal Weapon movies, the first three Die Hards, and - wait for it - Mr. Holland's Opus. Versatility. We like that in a composer.
  8. In addition to several songs from then up-and-comer Jeff Healey (who also appears in the film), the official soundtrack also includes two songs from Patrick Swayze.
  9. Animated fans: Road House has gotten shout-outs from both Family Guy and Cartoon Network's Squidbillies. Still waiting for the South Park kids to come around.
  10. An off-Broadway musical production of the film wowed audiences in 2003, provided they could finish reading the title before intermission. It was called Road House: The Stage Version Of The Cinema Classic That Starred Patrick Swayze, Except This One Stars Taimak From The '80s Cult Classic "The Last Dragon" Wearing A Blonde Mullet Wig. Bravo!
