A megalomaniacal ruler with a tiny mustache stops at nothing in a mad grab for power in fascist 1930's Europe - that guy Shakespeare was so ahead of his time. Writer and star Sir Ian McKellan transforms the Shakespearean classic into a whole other kind of period piece, creating an alternate version of English history life with all the intrigue and gore we came to love in the original. Annette Bening, Robert Downey Jr., Nigel Hawthorne, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas round out a high-brow cast that delights in keeping up with McKellan, whose straight-to-camera asides make him the Ferris Bueller of ruthless despots.
