Poltergeist III

PG-13 1988 | 101 mins | Science Fiction Horror
Carol Anne is ditching the suburbs and heading for the big city - unfortunately, Uncle Bruce and Aunt Pat have no idea there's a ferocious evil spirit hot on her trail. Creepy ghosts and special effects aside, this one has a particularly tragic ending: young actress Heather O'Rourke passed away before the film was released, leading many to believe in the so-called Poltergeist curse.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Actor Tom Skerritt's reference to Brian De Palma's "Carrie" in a scene with actress Nancy Allen in "Poltergeist III" was meant as an inside joke. Allen had also starred in that horror flick back in 1976.
  2. There were some explosive scenes in "Poltergeist III." A car exploded during filming setting the entire set on fire and almost killing a crew member. When actress Heather O'Rourke showed up for filming the next day she asked the director, "Did you get the shot?" Different people have different priorities.
  3. To add further credence to the "Poltergeist Curse" theory, actress Zelda Rubinstein had to leave the production of "Poltergeist III" midway through shooting because of her mother's death.
  4. Actresses Zelda Rubinstein and Heather O'Rourke are the only people to appear in all three Poltergeist films. Although, Rubinstein didn't make it to the end of production before her untimely death.
  5. Carol Anne's name is muttered 118 times in "Poltergeist III," I'm guessing a production assistant had the unfortunate duty of counting.
  6. "Poltergeist III" was Lara Flynn Boyle's film debut. She has gone on to star in a variety of films and TV shows, but she may be most famous for being Jack Nicholson's former girlfriend.
  7. Chicago's John Hancock Center was the setting for much of "Poltergeist III," however the shopping area and parking garage seen in the film do not exist in the Hancock Center.  Movie magic made that happen.
  8. At the beginning of "Poltergeist III," the characters think it's cold outside when it's really quite warm. This scene was taken from reality. Residents of extremely tall Chicago's John Hancock Center building often call the lobby doormen before leaving their apartments to find out what the real temperature is on the ground level.
  9. Actress Heather O'Rourke died just prior to "Poltergeist III" wrapping. Director Gary Sherman decided to temporarily shelve the project. Money talks and since the studio had already spent a lot on the film, they insisted that the film go ahead on schedule.
  10. "Poltergeist III" director Gary Sherman chose a city for the film's setting because he thought that it would be just as scary as living in isolated suburbia. Think about it...do your neighbors really care if you're in trouble?
