No Way Out

R 1987 | 114 mins | Action
Military dating rule #1: don't hook up with the Secretary of Defense's mistress. When Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell does just that, he soon finds himself investigating her murder - and topping the list as a prime suspect. Kevin Costner's star-making summer of 1987 included this taut political thriller co-starring Gene Hackman and Sean Young, as well as his attempts to take down Al Capone in The Untouchables just two months earlier.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. This is a remake of the 1948 film noir thriller The Big Clock, which surprisingly had nothing to do with Big Ben.
  2. The 1987 version had the working title Deceit, but No Way Out won the studio over. Maybe they were going for a traffic sign vibe.
  3. Speaking of traffic signs, you can still find the "Do Not Enter" sign Kevin Costner drives past when leaving the Arlington, Virginia safe house near the end of the movie. It's not far from the Pentagon. By the way, Pentagon security loves it when you go snooping around there for movie memorabilia.
  4. In addition to Arlington, the crew also filmed scenes in Annapolis, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; and Auckland, New Zealand. Let's hope they were able to carpool.
  5. Kevin Costner surprised his co-stars with adlibbed lines in the sexy limo scene - their startled laughter is the real deal. Wonder if he tried that with the buffalo in Dances With Wolves?
  6. Here's your time to shine, shutterbugs: Sean Young takes Kevin Costner's picture with a Polaroid camera and it makes an auto-eject sound when the photo comes out. Why is that weird? Because she's using an older Polaroid model with a manual film extract.
  7. When Costner gets chased into a D.C. Metro station, the train inside actually belongs to the Baltimore Metro. And if you want to get picky (we do), there's no station at that Georgetown location, either.
  8. Future superstar alert! This was Brad Pitt's feature film debut, in an uncredited role as an officer at a party laughing about a Maori dancer.
  9. Don't drink and roll: the bumper sticker on George Dzundza's wheelchair reads "Of course I'm drunk, I'm no stunt driver!"
  10. The film has attained a rare achievement in Hollywood: a 100% "Fresh" rating on the movie review website RottenTomatoes.com.
