Mr. and Mrs. Bridge

Hollywood's most revered couple becomes Kansas City's WASP-iest one in Merchant Ivory's take on the American mid-century middle class.  Family patriarch Paul Newman rules his brood with a stern face and an iron fist, but alas, the times are changing faster than you can say "Hitler invades Poland."  Daughter Kyra Sedgwick wants to run off to Manhattan to become an actress, son Robert Sean Leonard wants to join the armed forces to defend his country, and wife Joanne Woodward wants to try the newfangled world of psychotherapy, all with one central theme:  Mr. Bridge says no.  Fun fact: Joanne Woodward lost the Best Actress Oscar that year to an axe-wielding Kathy Bates for Misery.
