The Cotton Club

R 1984 | Drama Musical

It was the straw that almost broke slick Hollywood producer Robert Evans' back – making headlines not for its depiction of a segregated Harlem night club, but for its runaway budget and backstage brouhahas. Director Francis Ford Coppola reportedly banned Evans from the set; the pair eventually wound up in court. Off-screen drama notwithstanding, musical numbers and a star-studded cast including Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Nicolas Cage and Laurence Fishburne offer a high-gloss taste of the Jazz Age, done Hollywood style – capped off by the effortlessly transcendent footwork of Gregory Hines.
