As current day beauty queens can attest, you don't have to be a good girl to wear the crown. You don't even have to be smart or talented. You just need a dream. And this comedy about a promiscuous who schemes to win the title of Miss Firecracker shows how far some go for a little small town glory. Take Carnelle Scott (Holly Hunter), a sassy young woman who works at the local fish packing plant. Carnelle is determined to fulfill a fantasy of becoming her town's Fourth of July Queen. Helped and hindered by a colorful cast including Tim Robbins and Mary Steenbergen, Hunter reminds us there are beautiful people in the most unexpected places - even if they smell a little fishy.
