At the tender age of 16, a quiet, bookish girl named Jane Grey was crowned Queen of England and held the throne for nine days. It's one of the more humanizing tales in the legend of British royalty, humanized even further in Trevor Nunn's 1986 period drama with the help of beautiful young actors and a healthy dollop of romantic historical inaccuracy. The baby faces of Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes practically glow against dreary staterooms and ponderous costumes, too buoyant to let their surroundings-or that dastardly Bloody Mary-cast a shadow on their blossoming love or their dewy good looks. If you like The Tudors but maybe wish there was a little less nudity, grab yourself a scone and pamper your inner Anglophile.
