Kings of Leon

TV-PG 2009 | 100 mins | Concert EPIX Originals Music
When Kings of Leon released their fourth album Only by the Night in 2008, mainstream American radio finally discovered something the Brits had known for years: those guys rock. And so it only seems fair that 18,000 fans from across the pond should be front and center for Kings of Leon's very first concert film-shot at London's state-of-the-art O2 Arena. The blistering set list covers the band's young but prolific catalogue, from fan favorites "Molly's Chambers" and "The Bucket" to smash hits "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody."

    Top 10 Fun Facts

    1. It's a family affair: the band consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared, and their cousin Matthew. If your last name's not Followill, you're not in the band.
    2. All four Kings of Leon-ers go by their middle names rather than their first. Hey, it worked wonders for a guy named James Paul McCartney.
    3. You say nepotism like it's a bad thing: another cousin, Christopher "Nacho" Followill, joins the band on tour as a guitar technician. Wonder if that's his middle name?
    4. The Followill boys really wanted cousin Matthew to join the band-so they "kidnapped" him from his home in Mississippi. As lead vocalist Caleb explained, they told Matthew's mother they'd have him back within a week... and ten years later, those Kings we call Leon are still rocking their hearts out. (Apologies to Matthew's mom.)
    5. Haven't seen these guys perform live yet? Then you're not trying hard enough. Kings of Leon headlined nine different music festivals in 2009, including Sasquatch, Lollapalooza and something called "Gurtenfestival" in Switzerland.
    6. If you don't look good, we don't look good: drummer Nathan Followill gave fans a heads-up that the O2 show would be filmed, advising them via Twitter to "wear something pretty and get drunk before you get there. Party time." So if the crowd looks especially fashionable and rosy-cheeked, thank Nathan.
    7. According to Billboard Magazine, The band was excited to make their first concert film in England, the country where their music initially broke big. Drummer (and apparent band statesman) Nathan told Billboard.com, "we figured what better place to make a live DVD than where the fans have been the craziest for the longest?" Ah, England: home of Beatlemania, soccer hooligans and Kings of Leon fanatics.
    8. The band's name was inspired by the brothers' father and grandfather, who were both named Leon. That's good, because the only "Leon" we could think of was the guy who ran the snack bar at Rodbell's on Roseanne.
    9. With an opening act this good, who needs a headliner? (Don't tell U2, Bob Dylan or Pearl Jam we said that.)
    10. The title of every Kings of Leon album to date is five syllables long: Youth and Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak, Because of the Times and Only by the Night. Now you're well on your way to learning the ancient Japanese art of haiku.
