The saga of two men's attempt to escape imprisonment. An insurrection in the salt mines, a bathhouse murder, and attempted treachery by other inmates delay the breakout. Le Bras and Davert eventually escape from the penal colony, but they find that eluding recapture is just as difficult as escaping from Devil's Island.
