Gorky Park

R 1984 | 129 mins | Thriller
You gotta love a movie that, in its closing credits, points out who's responsible for the realistic looking cadavers. This thriller pre-dates all the primetime CSI's by about 15 years, so it was pretty cutting-edge for the film's opening sequence to feature three corpses with their faces scraped off! And so begins Arkady Renko's quest for answers. William Hurt plays this Soviet investigator determined to identify the victims of this gruesome murder. In doing so, he uncovers a sinister plot involving KGB agents, corrupt local bureaucrats and a mysterious American businessman. Based on a novel of the same name, the twists in Gorky Park will keep you on the edge of your seat. So come for the faceless corpses and stay for the exciting investigation!

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. In several interviews, Tusse Silberg has stated that a big portion of her part in "Gorky Park" was deleted from the final print. We're not sure what parts, though, because a bog portion of her saying that was cut from the final interviews.
  2. Gorky Park was Lee Marvin's swan song. Thanks for playing Lee.
  3. You won't find the Irish Coffee Bar where Renko and the others talk about brandy and creme de menthe. The establishment has closed down. So where, oh where, do people discuss brandy and creme de menthe nowadays? Fortunately, the Sheraton at Tegelbacken still stands. See you at the bar!
  4. Due to illness, Burt Lancaster had to bow out of his role in "Gorky Park." Fortunately, years later, a crazy Kevin Costner built a cornfield so Burt Lancaster could go back in time to wink at a pitcher and - wait, that's a baseball park, not a "Gorky Park." Sorry.
  5. The film was shot in Helsinki because the cold war prevented filming at the actual Moscow locations. Just think of how many Irish Coffee bars the filmmakers could choose from if allowed to film in Russia! The mind boggles.
  6. In real life "Gorky Park" was the Kaisaniemi Park in Helsinki. But no one wrote a book called "Kaisaniemi Park," so they had to use the "Gorky Park" material to make the movie.
  7. The main building of the University of Helsinki stood in for KGB headquarters for the film "Gorky Park." Many future Helsinkian collegiates upon hearing this, when attending the college later, were disappointed to find out that "KGB" didn't stand for "Killer Green Bud."
  8. Ian Dury of the band 'Ian Dury & the Blockheads' plays a money changer in "Gorky Park." The Blockheads appear in the animated version, "It's a Triple Homicide, Charlie Brown!"
  9. The medical trays containing tools change positions between cuts during shots at the morgue to stragetically cover the genital area in closeups. Those medical trays have a mind of their own, but at least they're on the side of modesty.
  10. It would have cost more to pay Lee Marvin to drive the Rolls Royce from Tegelbackan to Gamla Stan, so the man behind the wheel in those shots is the Swedish co-producer. Poor guy had to drive a Rolls Royce. The perils of producing films, I guess.
