Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood

R 1988 | 88 mins | Horror Thriller

Just when you thought Jason Voorhees was safely chained up at the bottom of Crystal Lake, along comes a girl with the telekinetic powers to release him and ruin everybody's weekend. But let's give 17-year-old Tina Shepard a little credit - sure, she unwittingly unleashes a serial killer on a bunch of unsuspecting teenage campers, but she also uses her powers to help clean up her own mess. We need more young people like that.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The original idea for Part VII was to pit Jason Voorhees against Nightmare on Elm Street big bad Freddy Krueger, but the characters' respective movie studios couldn't come to an agreement. Crossover junkies would have to wait until 2003 for the aptly titled Freddy vs. Jason.
  2. It's not entirely without a "versus," though. Friday the 13th superfans jokingly refer to Part VII as "Carrie vs. Jason," based on Tina Shepard's telekinetic similarities to Stephen King's wronged prom queen.
  3. Does the narrator at the beginning of the movie sound familiar? That's because he's Walt Gorney, the actor who played "Crazy Ralph" in the original Friday the 13th (he was in Part II, too).
  4. The breakfast of champions: Kane Hodder won the role of Jason Voorhees by eating live worms. Director John Carl Buechler was so impressed by Hodder's culinary commitment on the set of the 1988 flick Prison, he campaigned to bring the actor on board his next project as the new Jason.
  5. Although he didn't have to eat any worms this time around, Hodder did stomach all his own stunts - including falling through a stairway and having a porch roof fall on his head. It's not all red carpets and photo shoots, kids.
  6. Hodder had trouble with the sleeping bag murder scene, because he couldn't whack the dummy inside the sleeping bag against a tree with enough force to make it look believable. He finally nailed it on the last take - which is the shot that ended up in the movie.
  7. Sandra's drowning scene required three stunt doubles: two for the underwater shots and one more to play the dead body. You know you've made it in Hollywood when you don't have to play your own corpse. Just ask that girl who played Sandra.
  8. If at first you don't succeed: Part VII was submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America nine times before it finally escaped the dreaded "X" rating.
  9. So what, exactly, had to be cut out of the movie to earn that "R"? Maddy taking a knife to the face in the woodshed, Dr. Crew getting severed in half in the woods, and Jason holding David's decapitated head, for starters (let's stop while we're ahead).
  10. Before it was called "The New Blood," the film was known as "Birthday Bash." As in, Jason's gonna bash you in the face with a shovel but then the director will have to cut it out of the movie to get an "R" rating.
