Friday The 13th Part V A New Beginning

R 1985 | 92 mins | Horror
A new beginning, indeed. In this fifth freaky Friday film, gone are the summer camps and abandoned barns of old. Instead, the splatteriffic mayhem centers around an institution for troubled teens. Tommy (the boy who miraculously killed Jason in part 4) is all grown up now, yet still haunted by the horrific events of the previous film. Of course, it only gets harder to move on when a new string of hideous killings begins at the homicidal hands of a dude in a blood-stained hockey mask. Has Jason come back from the grave? Is Tommy brave enough to face him again?  Will the institution help this masked killer see the error of his ways? Maybe, maybe, and not a chance. Oh, and for those of you keeping track at home, this flick's body count is 22.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The powers that be tried to sidestep the whole "Final Chapter" issue by calling this next film A New Beginning. Guess "Friday the 14th" just didn't have the same pizzazz.
  2. A New Beginning was originally supposed to star Corey Feldman, reprising his role as Tommy Jarvis. Unfortunately, a little thing called Goonies got in the way. Damn you, Chunk!
  3. Can you spot the differences between Roy's hockey mask and Jason's? Here's a hint: you're looking for stripes versus triangles.
  4. Continuity crazies: Pam, Tommy and Reggie pass the same rocks several times as they make their way to see Demon. Hey, it could have been an homage to Scooby Doo.
  5. The actress who played Tina is Debi Sue Voorhees. Do you think she got the part because she had the same last name as Jason? And is that somehow considered nepotism? Maybe we should get the EEOC involved.
  6. Did you hear something? Lana is startled by the sound of plates breaking, but she's relieved to find that it was just the cat - who knocked down some pots and pans. Lana might need to work on her situational awareness.
  7. A few minor cuts had to be made to the film to avoid an "X" rating, including the scene in which the waitress takes an axe to the head. Apparently the sharp object in her head wasn't a problem, but her twitching on the ground after the fact simply took things too far.
  8. Keep your eyes peeled for some meaningful graffiti: the name "Victor Faden" is scrawled on the outhouse wall behind Demon. So here's the question - did Victor write it, and if so, did he do it before or after he was captured by the cops for killing Joey? Jason might not be the only homicidal maniac out to play...
  9. Jake and Robin are watching the 1951 romance A Place in the Sun. Elizabeth Taylor must have been so proud.
  10. Pam attacks Jason with a chainsaw on Friday the 13th, but the scene was actually filmed on Halloween night, 1984. That's WAY cooler than bobbing for apples.
