Friday The 13th Part III

R 1982 | 95 mins | Horror

Everybody knows that with a "3" in the title, it's gotta be in 3-D!  And this third installment of the Friday franchise is no exception. Harpoons soar, eyeballs squirt, and even the credits fly in this slash-happy flick. The story begins as the bloodthirsty Jason offs some store owners and holes up in a barn. Soon after, a new batch of culturally diverse young adults (including a nerd, stoners, bikers, and a mother-to-be) wander right into the killer's path - transforming the barn into a veritable roach motel for teens where they check in, but they never check out. Aside from the cheese-tastic third dimension, highlights include an athletic kid named Andy who walks on his hands right into a blade-wielding Jason and quickly becomes half the man he used to be. Also, fans know this is the film where Jason first donned his iconic hockey mask.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Watch out for flying pucks! Jason broke out his iconic hockey mask for the first time in this film.
  2. Not so fast, killer: Part III was intended to be the final chapter in the series. That is, until Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter (that one wasn't the final chapter, either).
  3. Since it had a three in the title, the film was a natural to hit theaters in 3-D. No such luck for Lethal Weapon 3, Home Alone 3 or The Three Musketeers.
  4. Part III was shot with the Arrivision "over and under" 3-D camera, which would also be used to shoot Jaws 3-D. Now show us a 3-D flick with Jason Voorhees AND a great white shark and we'll show you box office dynamite.
  5. Thanks to the 3-D revival of the early 1980s, Friday the 13th Part III raked in nearly ten million smackers during its opening weekend. Okay, it may not sound like much today, but a gallon of gas was only $1.28 back then. Hurts, doesn't it?
  6. If you want to relive Jason's 3-D rampage in all its glory, the 2009 deluxe edition of Friday the 13th Part III on DVD or Blu-ray includes a 3-D version of the film. Better yet, the glasses have the same red triangle and breathing holes as Jason's hockey mask! We love it when fun meets fashion forward.
  7. Several of the film's death scenes had to be edited to avoid the dreaded "X" rating (kids, "X" is what we had before "NC-17." Sounds way cooler, we know).
  8. Which scenes had to be cut down, you ask? Andy's, for one, which showed him being gutted. And not in the metaphorical way.
  9. Here's another one: Vera's death scene was trimmed because her acting was supposedly "too real." You know, you pay for all those acting classes and what good does it do you?
  10. One more (this one's a doozy): the scene where Chili is impaled with a red hot poker had to be trimmed because of - get this - a shot of her blood steaming as it hit the floor. Now why on earth would the ratings board have a problem with that?
