Fresh out of jail after serving 18 months on a forgery charge, Johnny (Al Pacino) gets a job as a short order cook in a New York City diner. There he finds the thing he's been waiting for his whole life: a no-nonsense waitress named Frankie (Michelle Pfeiffer) who's pretty sure she wants nothing to do with him. Garry Marshall directs this adaptation of Terrence McNally's stage play, proving that a romantic comedy can succeed without a Prince Charming in sight.
