Foxy Brown

R 1974 | 92 mins | Action
Nobody messes with Foxy Brown's man. When her undercover cop boyfriend is gunned down in cold blood, Foxy goes undercover, too – as a hooker looking to take down the ghetto's vicious drug cartel from the inside. Good thing for Foxy those fabulous '70s fashions afford a call girl plenty of places to hide some fire power. Pam Grier at once embodies and transcends the blaxploitation genre to become a sleek, sassy force of nature.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Director Jack Hill intended the film as a sequel to the previous year's Coffy, but the studio decided at the last minute that they wanted the film to stand alone. Coffy's name was changed to Foxy and the rest is history.
  2. As a result of the sudden switcheroo, the filmmakers had to omit Foxy's occupation from the film. Coffy had been a nurse, but there wasn't enough time to rewrite the script before shooting began - so Foxy's means of bringing home the bacon remain a mystery.
  3. Hill confessed that he was initially opposed to the wardrobe choices for Foxy's character - he found them too trendy, and worried they would make the movie feel dated within a few years. Little did he know that a sweet halter-top jumpsuit never goes out of style.
  4. Speaking of wardrobe, actress Juanita Brown sports a green harness dress in several scenes without any, shall we say, support for her chest-ular region. But when she later removes the dress, she's suddenly wearing a brassiere. Now that's what we call a wonder bra.
  5. Continuity crazies: when Jackie shoots her brother's ear, a spot of blood hits the wall behind him. Keep an eye on it, because it's going to change sizes.
  6. Magically morphing blood stains aside, there's also an issue of ballistics. We should be able to see into the bullet hole from our point of view, but the angle's off. Someone alert the Warren Commission.
  7. Music that'll make you shake your moneymaker: the film's soundtrack was written and performed by Motown recording artist Willie Hutch, who co-wrote the Jackson 5 classic "I'll Be There."
  8. Foxy Brown and its predecessor (but not prequel!) Coffy are credited as the first blaxploitation films to depict pimps and pushers as the bad guys, rather than making them sympathetic. And for that, the entire Law & Order franchise is eternally grateful.
  9. Film historians also give Foxy credit as one of the first female figures in blaxploitation films to rise above the role of arm candy. Who knew strong, empowered women were so darn sexy?
  10. Foxy Brown's influence stretches far and wide in film history, with references in movies as varied as House of the Dead to Austin Powers in Goldmember. Keep watching, she's sure to pop up soon at a theater near you.
