For A Few Dollars More

R 1967 | 132 mins | Western
The Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood) rides again in part two of Sergio Leone's spaghetti western trilogy, and this time he's riding alongside the Man in Black. No, not Johnny Cash - it's Lee Van Cleef as a fellow bounty hunter with a fondness for monochromatic ensembles. (C'mon, it's slimming). These two loners join forces to go after vicious fugitive El Indio, who just might be wanted for more than the price on his head.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Although the film's interiors were shot on a soundstage in Rome, the exteriors were shot on location in Spain. So it's sort of a half-spaghetti, half-paella western.
  2. Good things come to those who wait: the film was released in Italy in 1965, but American audiences had to wait until 1967 to get a second glimpse of the "Man with No Name."
  3. Director Sergio Leone was excited to begin work on this sequel promptly after the 1964 success of A Fistful of Dollars in his native Italy - but Clint Eastwood wasn't so eager to sign on, considering he hadn't seen the first film yet. (American audiences would have to wait until 1967 for that one, too.)
  4. Eastwood's tough as nails bounty hunter may have been the "Man with No Name," but he did have a nickname. In the English-dubbed version, his character is said to "go by the name of 'Manco,'" which is a Spanish word that means "one-armed."
  5. True to his nickname, "Manco" uses only his left hand in almost all actions - leaving his right hand free to draw his pistol. Clint Eastwood even knows how to make ambidexterity cool.
  6. Looking to trod on a piece of cinematic history? The town of Agua Calienta - where Indio flees after robbing the bank - is really Albaricoques, a small "pueblo blanco" on the Nijar plain in Spain. (Take an umbrella, though. Didn't we hear something about the rain falling mainly there?)
  7. Are you a fan of this movie, but you wish it had a few more laughs? Try on For a Few Dollars Less, an Italian language parody from 1966.
  8. Déjà viewing: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End pays homage to this film's final duel. Keep an eye on Davy Jones's locket (not to be confused with his locker) to see what we mean.
  9. The tributes don't stop with the big screen - a character in the video game Metal Gear Solid 3 is based on Lee Van Cleef and even carries the same kind of weapon as his character in this film, Colonel Mortimer.
  10. The band Metallica sampled a horn from the film's score - played in reverse - in their hit song "The Unforgiven." Cool, but wouldn't it have made more sense to borrow from Eastwood's Oscar-winning western Unforgiven?
