Drillbit Taylor

Synopsis

Where was this guy when Anthony Michael Hall needed him? Drillbit Taylor is a bodyguard for hire – at least, that's what he tells the pair of nerdy high school freshmen seeking his services, because let's face it: one man's hobo is another man's elite security task force. Owen Wilson stars as the boys' sensei-turned-substitute teacher in a comedy with a pedigree that's hard to argue; the story was originally conceived by master of hilarious high school angst himself, John Hughes, and co-written by Superbad scribe Seth Rogen. And yes, the whole affair's produced by Judd Apatow – like you had to ask. Pratfalls and crotch shots abound, so sit back, pop open a cold one and give thanks that you never have to be a freshman again.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Actor Adam Baldwin appears briefly in "Drillbit Taylor" as a bodyguard who doesn't think kids need protecting... Luckily for Baldwin, they keep making movies about this stupid subject. His first film role was as a bodyguard who protects a fellow student from a bully ("My Bodyguard," 1980).
  2. "Drillbit Taylor" actors Owen Wilson and Leslie Mann first worked together in "The Cable Guy." Since then, Wilson has progressed from playing a character that has no name to a film's title character. Mann has progressed to become the wife of the producer, Judd Apatow.
  3. Chuck Liddel, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, interviews with the kids to be a potential bodyguard in "Drillbit Taylor." The child actors could not crack the "Iceman."
  4. The filmmakers were comics, not soldiers, so they needed some help with lingo like traps and snares. A military Field guide came in handy for that stuff.
  5. The characters of Ryan, Wade, and Emmit in "Drillbit Taylor" were loosely based on the Three Stooges. This is not the first time this formula has been used. For example: Randy, Simon, and Paula.
  6. Director Steven Brill encouraged improvisation on the "Drillbit Taylor" set to bring the characters more fully to life. Like Pinocchio, Brill wanted the characters to become real boys.
  7. Owen Wilson did not conduct any interviews to promote "Drillbit Taylor." The reason given was that Wilson had other work commitments. Others speculated that Wilson was avoiding questions related to another commitment – of a medical variety.
  8. Director Steven Brill also worked with "Drillbit Taylor" actress Leslie Mann on the film Big Daddy. Mann's Baby Daddy, producer Judd Apatow, did not produce that film.
  9. When the Tiger Services bodyguard is interviewed in "Drillbit Taylor," he puts his hand in a cup of coffee from another table. Breaking the laws of science through the magic of the movies, the steam moves out of the cup and downward instead of upward, as it would in the real world.
  10. The film "Drillbit Taylor" had the tagline, "You get what you pay for." If released today, the tagline would have been, "Bodyguard on a budget."
