Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

PG 1988 | 110 mins | Comedy

Suave con artist Lawrence (Michael Caine) earns a handsome living wooing ladies along the French Riviera. But when small time American hustler Freddy moves in on Lawrence's action, there simply aren't enough wealthy, unwitting women to go around. The only logical solution? A gentlemen's wager: first man to extract $50,000 from one lovely young mark lays claim to the prime turf - and quite possibly her heart.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Familiar Rotten Scoundrels: the film closely follows the plot of 1964's Bedtime Story, starring Marlon Brando and David Niven.
  2. If you're making a pilgrimage to the film's beautiful French Riviera town Beaumont-sur-Mer, don't get lost. In real life it's actually called Beaulieu-sur-Mer.
  3. Those two little dots aren't just for decoration, you know: a sign in the train station reads "ZURICH," without the umlaut over the letter U.
  4. Movie audiences who saw the trailer for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels watched a scene in which Steve Martin walks along the waterfront and pushes a lady over the edge - but it didn't make the film's final cut.
  5. The Star Wars connection: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels director Frank Oz and actor Ian McDiarmid both appeared in Return of the Jedi.
  6. Oz shot alternate takes of the scene with Steve Martin posing for pictures with bikini babes on the beach: one version with bikini tops, and one version without. He mentions in the DVD commentary that he felt like the most powerful man in the world when he commanded the women to take their tops off.
  7. Daddy-daughter dance: the tall black-haired girl dancing next to Michael Caine in the disco scene is actually his real-life daughter.
  8. Caine's performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Unfortunately for the British thesp, he was up against Tom Hanks in Big.
  9. Thanks to her role as the plucky Janet Colgate, Glenne Headly was named Most Promising New Actress by the Chicago Film Critics Association. Take that, Lady Fanny of Omaha!
  10. If you love the movie but feel like it's missing some good song and dance numbers, you'll be glad to know that a successful stage musical version of the film opened on Broadway in 2005, starring John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz.
