Curse of the Pink Panther

PG 1983 | 110 mins | Comedy Family Adventure

The great Inspector Clouseau is missing - and it turns out plenty of people would like to keep it that way. Clouseau's boss assigns a hapless New York detective (Ted Wass) to find his equally hapless French counterpart, and with that, the Pink Panther franchise attempts to reboot itself (key word: attempts). This turned out to be Sergeant Clifton Sleigh's one and only outing, so enjoy the anomaly while it lasts.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Double-oh Clouseau: the reigning James Bond himself, Roger Moore, appears in a brief cameo as the missing Inspector Clouseau.
  2. We knew 007 was a ladies man, but he's apparently also a pretty good multi-tasker: Roger Moore filmed his scenes during a break from shooting Octopussy.
  3. Speaking of guys named Moore, Blake Edwards wanted Dudley Moore to play Clouseau's heir apparent, Detective Clifton Sleigh, but Moore turned the role down.
  4. Edwards also suggested Rowan Atkinson for the part, but the studio feared he was too unknown in America. Don't feel too badly for Atkinson, though - he'd eventually cross the pond years later as the bumbling Mr. Bean.
  5. Curse of the Pink Panther features appearances by David Niven, Capucine and Robert Wagner, reprising their roles from the original Pink Panther 20 years earlier.
  6. It turned out to be David Niven's final film performance, and due to his failing health, his voice had to be dubbed by "Man of a Thousand Voices" Rich Little.
  7. Before his death, Peter Sellers had written a Pink Panther script in which Clouseau hangs up his police badge and begins a life of crime - a plot point that finally makes it to the screen in this film.
  8. Confounding Panther scholars everywhere, Curse of the Pink Panther was actually the working title of what would become Revenge of the Pink Panther, which had been released five years earlier.
  9. Just as Henry Mancini's Pink Panther theme had gotten a disco makeover in the '70s, this time around the tune was tweaked with a hearty helping of '80s-style synthesizers.
  10. This was the first Pink Panther film not to have a commercially released soundtrack. (See above, re: synthesizers).
