Bull Durham

R 1988 | 108 mins | Comedy
A quick lesson for the uninitiated: Kevin Costner does not play "Bull Durham." Tim Robbins does not play "Bull Durham." Even Susan Sarandon does not play "Bull Durham." It's like how there's not a guy named "Hootie" singing for the Blowfish. That said, Bull Durham is something much better than a character name-it's widely considered one of the greatest (and funniest) sports movies of all time, as sizzling language and sultry chemistry help turn a minor league baseball diamond into a sexy, sassy love triangle.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Susan Sarandon's character is named "Annie," which also happens to be dugout slang for "groupie." We'd tell you what hockey players call their groupies, but it can't be printed here.
  2. Sports Illustrated declared Bull Durham the greatest sports movie of all time. Take that, Hoosiers!
  3. Continuity crazies: when Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) is on the bus reminiscing about his time in the majors, he's holding a guitar. Moments later, he's holding a pair of sunglasses in addition to the guitar. Then poof, the sunglasses are gone. Then the guitar is gone. And by the time Nuke (Tim Robbins) challenges him to a fight, Crash is holding the guitar again. Perhaps Costner should add "prop ninja" to the special skills section of his résumé.
  4. Not so continuity-crazy: sometimes Crash bats left-handed, sometimes he bats right-handed. Looks like K.C. can add "switch hitter" to that résumé, too.
  5. Kevin Costner's role was originally intended for Kurt Russell, who helped writer/director Ron Shelton develop the script. Wonder if they would've called it Tango and Crash?
  6. Future Hollywood mega-couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon met for the first time on the Bull Durham set. Their happily ever after includes two sons, two Oscars, and a Maltipom named Penny.
  7. Debra Winger also auditioned for the role of Annie, but luckily for Jack and Miles Robbins, she turned it down.
  8. Somebody get the boys of summer some cocoa: Bull Durham was filmed in North Carolina during the mid-to-late fall, which means sometimes temperatures dipped so low you can see the actors' breath.
  9. The (real) Durham Bulls won the 2009 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game, even without the help of Nuke LaLoosh's fastball.
  10. Costner's character Crash Davis tells Annie he believes "Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone." Three years later, Costner starred in JFK as Jim Garrison, a district attorney convinced the Kennedy assassination was a conspiracy. Careful, Kev-a flip-flop like that could cost a guy the election.
