Breakin'

PG 1984 | 87 mins | Drama Musical

Imagine Flashdance with more poppin', lockin' and head spins, and you've got yourself 1984's breakdancing opus - perhaps best known for its sequel's subtitle, "Electric Boogaloo." In the original, up-and-coming jazz dancer Kelly (aka "Special K") discovers a whole new way to move when she teams up with breakdancers Ozone and Turbo. If you're not too distracted by all the funky fresh dancing going on, keep your eyes peeled for Ice-T in his big screen debut.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The movie was partly inspired by a German documentary called Breakin' and Enterin', which showcased a downtown Los Angeles hip hop club during the movement's formative years. Just like those embarrassing home movies of you running naked through the sprinklers.
  2. Many of the documentary's subjects went on to appear in the fictionalized Breakin', including Boogaloo Shrimp and Ice-T, in his feature film debut.
  3. Ice-T has reportedly stated that he considers his performance as a club MC in the film to be "wack." Interpret that how you will.
  4. Really big Break: not only is Breakin' Ice-T's movie debut, but the soundtrack also marks his first appearance on an album.
  5. Several dancers from the film - including Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones and Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers - were later featured prominently in Chaka Khan's music video for "I Feel for You."
  6. Though it's not revealed in the end credits, Turbo and Ozone's real names are Tony and Orlando, respectively. Which begs the question, what happened to Dawn?
  7. During the first street-dancing scene at the beach, keep your eyes peeled for a buff white guy wearing a black wrestling singlet. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jean-Claude Van Damme.
  8. The film's soundtrack features the single "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" by dance-pop duo Ollie & Jerry, who also contributed the song "Electric Boogaloo" to the sequel's soundtrack.
  9. Actress Lela Rochon, who was married to Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones at the time of filming, appears as an extra during the opening credits.
  10. In some countries, the film was released as Breakdance: The Movie. Wonder what those countries called Grease?
