Black Rain

Synopsis

Michael Douglas versus the Japanese mafia - thanks to director Ridley Scott, it's everything you'd dream it to be. As a xenophobic New York cop, Douglas and his partner Andy Garcia take on organized crime in 1980s Osaka, where a fish-out-of-water's only defense is an American-made can of whoop ass. The Yakuza are a wily bunch, though, and it takes the street smarts of Yankee barmaid Kate Capshaw to show Douglas the way. Jackie Chan reportedly turned down a role in the film, fearing it would be too dark for his heroic screen image; whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Jackie Chan turned down the role of the villain in Black Rain because he didn't want to play a "bad" character. However, Chan showed no such qualms when it comes to making bad movies, such as "Tuxedo".
  2. Like a puppet on a string - if you look closely you can see the man Conklin shoots getting pulled back through the doorway with a wire.
  3. Actor Yusaku Matsuda saw the movie "Black Rain" as his last chance at immortality. He took on the role of the movie's villain despite being diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer. He died less than seven weeks after the film's American premiere.
  4. A winery in Napa Valley, California had to serve as Japan when the film crew of "Black Rain" was kicked out of the country when their visa ran out. Makes you wonder why they didn't just shoot in the U.S. to begin with.
  5. Did he switch hands or is it a continuity problem? You decide. Masahiro is holding the phone in his left hand and then his right during a phone call at the police station.

  7. "Black Rain" was the first in a trilogy of roles for Michael Douglas in which he played characters named Nick. His characters in "Basic Instinct" and "The Game" were also named Nick. Replace the N with a D and one might wonder if someone was trying to tell us something.
  8. The movie title "Black Rain" refers to the deadly nuclear fallout caused by the detonation of an atomic weapon. Purple Rain is caused by the detonation of the artist formerly know as Prince.
  9. Japanese audiences for "Black Rain" could be forgiven for being confused. Actor Yusaku Matsuda was known for playing cops in Japan but played a yakuza in Black Rain. Ken Takakura, the cop in the movie, is known for playing yakuzas. American audience can be forgiven for not knowing what a yakuza is.
  10. After spending a fortune while filming and dealing with some rather unpleasant situations, "Black Rain" director Ridley Scott declared that he would never film in Japan again. He would return for the sushi though.
