Baby Boom

PG 1987 | 110 mins | Comedy
J.C. Wiatt (Diane Keaton) is the quintessential '80s businesswoman: power lunches, power suits, power shoulder pads. But her rising star takes a detour when she suddenly inherits a beautiful bouncing baby girl, diapers and all. Goodbye Manhattan, hello Vermont! It's like Three Men and a Baby meets Green Acres starring Annie Hall. Luckily, Keaton is hilarious, baby Elizabeth is adorable, and town vet Sam Shepard is sufficiently swoon-worthy.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Kim Basinger reportedly passed up the role of J.C. Wiatt in Baby Boom, but her biological clock must have started ticking soon afterward - she went on to nurture her wacky maternal instincts in My Stepmother Is an Alien.
  2. Kate Jackson took on the role of J.C. for a sitcom version of Baby Boom - but after 8 episodes, NBC called it quits. Maybe ratings would have been better if they'd called it "One of Charlie's Angels Inherits a Baby."
  3. On the TV version, baby Elizabeth was turned into a 2-year-old so the twins from the movie could continue to play her. You know what they say: if it's still cute, don't fix it.
  4. After playing baby Elizabeth on the big and small screens, twin sisters Michelle and Kristina Kennedy hung up their acting shoes for good. That's too bad - we'd like to see them rumble with the Olsen twins.
  5. Rumor has it that J.C.'s success with her "Country Baby" line of gourmet baby food was inspired by Vermont's own Earth's Best baby food. So the next time you've got writer's block, head to the supermarket and find yourself a plot twist.
  6. J.C. works at Sloane Curtis Advertising, which is the same firm where Mel Gibson sets up shop in What Women Want - a 2000 romantic comedy directed by Nancy Myers (who just so happened to write the screenplay for Baby Boom). It's sort of like the way John Hughes liked to set his films in Shermer, Illinois - but with more power suits and Nike commercials.
  7. Cameo patrol: Saturday Night Live alum Victoria Jackson plays Eve, the nanny who lets it all hang out.
  8. Mr. Big, is that you? Chris Noth has a brief part as a tourist charmed by J.C.'s baby food in the general store. Carrie Bradshaw just got very, very excited to hear the words "Mr. Big" and "baby" mentioned in the same breath.
  9. Harold Ramis took a time out from busting ghosts to play J.C.'s yuppie boyfriend Steven. Although if you think about it, babies make a lot of stuff that could double as ectoplasm - so he was actually the perfect man for the job.
  10. Continuity crazies: when J.C. talks to the plumber about what it will cost to replace the pipes in her new Vermont home, the door on his van is alternately opened and closed. Uhh, Mr. Ramis? We might actually need you to bust some ghosts.
