Apocalypse Now Redux

R 2001 | 196 mins | Drama Action Adventure War

Released in 2001, Apocalypse Now Redux is director Francis Ford Coppola's re-imagining of his seminal 1979 war epic, re-edited to include 49 new minutes of material not seen in the original. The result is a film even more surreal than its predecessor, as Playboy bunnies, surfboards and napalm merge into a single strange tale of Americans at war.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Don't call it a director's cut: most fans and critics consider Apocalypse Now Redux a completely new film altogether. Director Francis Ford Coppola agrees, and we're guessing he knows what he's talking about.
  2. Thanks to advancements in technology, Coppola was able to digitally enhance some scenes to achieve his original vision for the film. Unfortunately for us all, angry robot invaders from Mars were not a part of that vision.
  3. Nepotism redux: the restored scene on the rubber plantation features Coppola's sons Giancarlo and Roman as children of the de Marais family.
  4. Most of the original film's dialogue had to be re-recorded due to off-screen noise. The problem: actors had only voiced over scenes that made the final cut - so many of them, including Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall and Sam Bottoms - had to return decades later to record dialogue for the restored footage.
  5. Coppola discovered a long lost romantic theme for one of the restored scenes, composed by his late father Carmine during production of the original film.
  6. In color balancing the new film, cinematographer Vittorio Storaro used a Technicolor Dye-Transfer Process (with Coppola's consent) that required him to cut the original prints of Apocalypse Now. That means Redux is the only print of the film available.
  7. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning... until the wind changes." In one of the new scenes, Kilgore's beloved, victory-smelling napalm proceeds to shift the wind current, ruining his perfect waves. Bummer, dude.
  8. Once more, with less Mick: in the original film, Willard first looks at the dossier while the crew members goof around listening to the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." In Redux, Willard reviews the dossier at a later time, in relative peace and quiet.
  9. "Monkey Sampan," a deleted scene not included in either version of the film, was originally intended to represent the entire film in a three-minute scene.
  10. Critic Roger Ebert said of the film (and its predecessor), "Longer or shorter, redux or not, Apocalypse Now is one of the central events of my life as a filmgoer."
