Amityville 3D

PG 1983 | 93 mins | Horror
How do you make Amityville's infamous supernatural house-with-windows-for-eyes even scarier? Shoot it in 3-D! But don't bust out your cardboard glasses just yet; sadly, the film remains in two dimensions for us poor saps watching at home. There's no reason to feel shortchanged, though - where else can you find Lori Loughlin and Meg Ryan messing around with a Ouija board? (Aside from your dreams, of course.)

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. The movie was also known as Amityville: The Demon and Amityville III: The Demon. Hello? Why not Amityville 3-Demon? Use your head, studio!
  2. Take a look at the sign posted for the Amityville Real Estate company at the beginning of the film - the phone number is 666-1818. And it's not just the first three numbers that are scary. 1+8+1+8=18, and you get 18 by adding... three sixes! Who knew Satan was a certified Realtor?
  3. Amityville 3-D used the tagline "Enter the gateway to hell... at your peril!" They truncated the part that said "Please return your 3-D glasses to the usher after the film" because it didn't look as cool on the poster.
  4. Meg Ryan's bit part gets all the attention, but this was also Lori "Aunt Becky" Loughlin's film debut - three years before the Olsen twins came into the world.
  5. Pre-teens welcome: this is the only film in the Amityville series to score a PG rating.
  6. The owners of the house used in filming decided to modify the infamous "eye" windows to limit the number of drive-by gawkings. So if you're looking for a souvenir photo, you'll have to sneak around to the back side of the house. (Don't tell them we sent you.)
  7. If you're wild about Howard Blake's original score in the movie, you can pick it up as a bonus offering on the 2000 release of the Flash Gordon original score. Trust us, that's a free gift with purchase that rivals any cosmetics counter in the country.
  8. Director Richard Fleischer also helmed the Charlton Heston classic Soylent Green. Now THAT should have been in 3-D.
  9. Candy Clark, the actress who plays Melanie, is no stranger to scary movies. After Amityville 3-D she went on to star in such fright flicks as Q-The Winged Serpent, The Blob, Cherry Falls, and she even played Buffy's mom in the film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Horror films give some people nightmares - they gave Candy Clark a pension plan.
  10. Amityville 3-D was nominated for Best International Fantasy Film at the 1986 Fantasporto Awards. We're guessing "fantasporto" is Portuguese for "do these 3-D glasses make me look stupid?"
