Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert

R 1994 | 103 mins | Comedy
Two drag queens and a transsexual get onto a bus headed for the Australian Outback... what seems like the set-up to a horrible kangaroo joke turns out to be the premise of 1994's campy cult comedy from the land down under. Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce (yes, that Guy Pearce) take their fabulous costumes and fierce disco numbers across the country, on their way to a gig that has a secret but special meaning to one of them. This film should be mandatory viewing for each and every contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. As if the movie isn't fabulous enough on its own, Priscilla was "shown in Dragarama" in select theaters - which included a disco ball and some crazy colored lighting. Feel free to do the same in your living room.
  2. Both Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving got their big breaks with this film. It's every actor's dream, you know - to be launched from obscurity while wearing a dress.
  3. Terence Stamp, meanwhile, already had a long and illustrious career when he was cast in Priscilla - although he had never played a transsexual. Although General Zod did rock a daring sparkly V-neck in Superman.
  4. Bill Hunter, who played Bob the mechanic, was shooting Muriel's Wedding at the same time as Priscilla - meaning he had to travel back and forth across Australia between scenes. Remember that the next time you grumble about having to walk all the way down the hall to the conference room for your 2 o'clock meeting.
  5. Producers originally thought about casting Australian singers Jason Donovan and Michael Hutchence as Tick and Adam. If only they'd considered The Wiggles.
  6. Next time you're down under, you can pay homage to Priscilla at the Imperial Hotel in the Sydney suburb of Erskineville - both the opening and closing scenes were filmed there (on the same day, no less).
  7. Hidden in plain sight: shooting on the bus was such a cramped affair that some crew members often had to hide under clothes or other props. Now you can think of the crew like gravity: you can't see them, but you know they're there.
  8. The Closing Ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney featured a tribute to Priscilla, including drag queens and stiletto floats. And once again, The Wiggles were overlooked.
  9. Priscilla was nominated for best picture - comedy/musical at the 1995 Golden Globe Awards, and took home the Academy Award for best costume design. And trust us, there is no fiercer accessory than an Oscar.
  10. If the Aussie accents are just too much for you to handle, you can always check out what's more or less the American version: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. But you won't get dancing Aborigines. Them's the breaks.
